Imagine playing a computer game without any hassles. Drivers, troubleshooting, installations, compatibility, performance--all thrown out the window. Upgrading? A thing of the past. All you have to do is click on the game, and seconds later, you're playing. That's what OnLive claims to deliver. Should it work half as well as advertised, expect to see the gaming world thrown into upheaval by a box no bigger than a deck of playing cards. The story gets even more unbelievable when you factor in price. According to company reps, OnLive intends to significantly undercut every existing console on the market.

At its core, OnLive is a subscription service similar to cable TV or Netflix. In other respects, OnLive is what you get when you pump something like YouTube full of steroids. Instead of just watching a pile of videos, you're streaming gameplay at HDTV resolutions and controlling your character in real time. You get Crysis on your HDTV at the highest-quality settings--run by a computer that's hundreds of miles from your doorstep. It's really no wonder Rearden Labs spent the better part of a decade perfecting and designing OnLive.

[WoW]Deadly Gladiator's Frostwyrm Video

The latest PTR build added the first gladiator mount of Wrath of the Lich King, the Deadly Gladiator's Frostwyrm. This mount will be given to the top 0.5% teams at the end of the Season 5 of the Arena.

Battle.net accounts coming to the EU

Blizzard's various websites (official WoW site,the Armory, etc) have all been down for maintenance today, and we had no real idea why. Word is coming in from the EU that the switch to Battle.net accounts that we talked about previously is finally coming about.

Portions of the official EU site are redirecting to this Battle.net login page.

We knew this would happen eventually, especially since the name of the Authenticator changed on the PTR from being World of Warcraft specific to a more broad Battle.net name, but the fact that it's coming without formal notice is a bit surprising! If you're unfamiliar with what a Battle.net account actually is, it's more or less the same as your WoW account but instead of an account name, it uses your e-mail address and it spans all Blizzard games. Considering the Starcraft II beta is rumored to be starting quite soon, this is probably good timing for the switch.

We have no idea if this switch is happening in the US yet, but it's probably a safe assumption that it will. Or if it hasn't, we'll be seeing it very soon. If we find out more, we'll be sure to let you know.

Update: US.battle.net is now online and fully functional. EU still in developmentell.

[News] IE 8 Officially Released at Noon EST

Microsoft has announced that a final version of Internet Explorer 8, the faster (but not quite fastest), web-standards-compliant, default browser of Windows 7, will be available starting at noon EST (9am PST) today.

An official update notice won't be pushed out through Windows Update for a while yet, but eager upgraders should watch the IE 8 beta page, or perhaps just the Internet Explorer home page, for an upgrade link around go-live time. But, given what we've learned about big, timed Microsoft releases, you might want to save yourself some 404 error trauma and wait until you get home from work.

Under Development Page Updated With UI Changes

The official “Under Development” page was updated with some of the upcoming UI changes in 3.1. Below are the highlights of the dual spec and other changes that will improve game play.

Dual Specialization

As we’ve continued to develop the dual specialization feature, we’ve made a number of changes in response to playtesting and feedback. Highlights:

The minimum level to use this feature has been lowered to 40.
Lexicons of Power will not be necessary for switching between saved talent specs and glyphs. Players will be able to switch between their chosen talents anywhere.
Switching between talent specs will take 5 seconds, and all mana and resources will be reset to zero when doing so.
A talent preview option can be activated within the user interface as an advanced option.
When respeccing talents, whichever pane is active will be reset while the other remains unchanged.
The cost to purchase the dual spec capability is 1,000 gold.
Players will not be able to switch between specs during combat, Arenas, or Battlegrounds.

Equipment Manager

Another new feature in the upcoming patch is the equipment manager. Once turned on, players will be able to save sets of gear by simply equipping them and creating a hotkey with the currently equipped set. Switch easily between PvP gear, PvE gear, or even your fishing gear for a quiet time next to your favorite lake. Equipment can be switched out from within bag inventory or personal bank inventory. Players will need to be at the bank when swapping between sets if the gear is located in the bank. Should there not be enough room in the player’s bags, the equipment will be placed automatically in the bank. Should neither the bags nor their personal bank have room, the transition will not occur. Highlights:

Easily swap equipment between saved sets.
Pull items directly from your backpack or bank.
Create a hotkey to switch between sets.

Objectives Tracker

Quest and achievement tracking can make your travels a bit easier, and we’ve made some improvements to the system that will help players track multiple quests or achievements at once. Highlights:

Track multiple quests and achievements at once after activating this feature in the options menu.
Use items needed for quests without searching through bags.
Move the objectives window wherever it’s most convenient for you

Looking For Group Improvements

The looking for group feature has also had some slight updates that allow players to choose the role they would like to take in a group. When players open the window, they will be able to choose which roles they are willing to fulfill in a group (damage, tank, or healer). Players will also be able to choose whether or not they would like to be a group leader. In addition, the matching system will now allow sorting players in the looking for more pane by roles. Highlights:

Select from new damage, tank, and healer role options.
Choose the leader role option.
Easily sort results in looking for more.

Battleground Queue From Anywhere

Players will now be able to queue for Battlegrounds from anywhere in the world via the Battleground tab in the PvP section of the interface. Once the match is complete, players will be returned to the location where they entered it from.

Queue for any available Battleground from anywhere in the world.
Players must be out of combat in order to enter the Battleground.
Automatically return to the location you left when the Battleground ends.

On March 17, Apple presented the blueprint for iPhone OS 3.0, the next version of the world’s most advanced mobile platform.

In addition to previewing its innovative features, Apple gave members of the iPhone Developer Program immediate access to the iPhone OS 3.0 software beta and an updated Software Development Kit (SDK) with over 1,000 completely new APIs.

1,000 new APIs for developers.

With the new SDK, members of the iPhone Developer Program can build applications that do even more. Developers will have the tools to enable in-app purchases — like subscriptions, additional game levels, and new content. They can also create apps that connect peer to peer via Bluetooth, communicate with hardware accessories, and use the Apple Push Notification service to provide alerts.

[Album of the Week] Scream (Chris Cornell)

Produced with a heavy hand by Timbaland, the third solo album from ex-Soundgarden and Audioslave singer Chris Cornell is strangely appealing in its elaborately empty efficiency.

Gleaming ballads like "Long Gone" and the title track wring mild drama from a combination of Cornell's husky crooning and stacks of portentous Phil Collins–derived synths.

As Akon knockoffs go, some of this stuff isn't bad, but the fast numbers ("Time," "Get Up"), with Cornell's angsty rock-god vocals ricocheting off Timbo's skittering beats, are fresher and more enjoyable, at least in a monkey-riding-a-tricycle sort of way.
